The Need Is Clear
Families and young people across Ventura County face significant barriers when seeking mental health and substance use support. Our needs assessment showed:
A Growing Youth Mental Health Crisis
Ventura County youth ages 12–24 experience nearly double the state average rates of behavioral health issues.
Among ages 18–24:
- 75% report anxiety
- 50%+ report depression
- 31% report suicidal thoughts
- 16% engage in self-harm
Substance Use Treatment Is Hard to Access
Only 10% of Californians with a substance use disorder received treatment last year.
Most programs are expensive, for-profit, and designed for adults—not teens or young adults.
Insurance Barriers Limit Care
In Oxnard, 15% of residents are uninsured and 30% rely on Medi-Cal, leaving few youth-friendly services available.
A Critical Gap in Youth Services
Teens and young adults ages 13–25 had no accessible, youth-centered program that was free, holistic, and designed specifically for them.
Existing programs were limited to those who could afford private insurance or high fees.
Transportation Barriers Keep Youth From Services
Many young people simply couldn’t get to appointments, especially in rural areas.
Without reliable transportation, even good programs were out of reach.
