Nate’s Story

A Life Full of Heart and Strength

Our son, Nathan (Nate) Rhoades, lived a full life with tremendous passion. As a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer at Gold’s Gym, he dedicated himself to helping others get fit and live healthy lives. He loved fitness, boxing, weight lifting, music, and anything athletic or sports-related. Nate was a unique young man — compassionate, funny, and full of heart. Surrounded by tons of friends and a long-term girlfriend who adored him, he was always supporting and cheering people on.

A Fighter From the Beginning

Nate had a tough start in life. Born 12 weeks premature and weighing just over two pounds, he spent almost two months in the hospital before coming home. Because of this early start, he grew up battling some health challenges, but he managed and overcame them through a healthy lifestyle and strong discipline.

Nate’s Recovery Journey

When Nate was 14 years old, he became addicted to drugs. He went to a substance use treatment center to receive the help he needed. Through residential treatment, intensive outpatient programs, individual and family counseling, 12-step meetings, and working a recovery program, he found his footing again. Nate also had ADHD, and taking medication helped him greatly.

However, the key element in Nate’s recovery during his teen years was his Peer Support Recovery Coach, Kyle, whom we hired for a year and a half. Kyle spent 3–4 days a week with Nate — mentoring him, taking him to meetings, and introducing him to weight lifting and guitar. Kyle was 24 at the time and in recovery himself, and he had a tremendous impact on Nate’s life. He showed Nate that he could live a happy, fulfilling life clean, sober, and mentally stable.

Nate threw himself into his recovery. He was named Defensive MVP on his Nordhoff High School football team and later became a bodybuilder and boxer. He loved helping others and even attended the Addiction Studies program at Oxnard College.

A Tragic Loss — and Nate’s Last Act of Giving

Tragically, Nate passed away on January 20, 2022, at the age of 21, after a car accident involving a semi-truck.

Although Nate was brain dead almost instantly, the rest of his body was incredibly healthy due to his lifestyle. We were able to donate all of his organs to recipients waiting for transplants — something Nate would have done in a heartbeat.

Since our son’s death, we have heard from three of his donor recipients who shared their gratitude for receiving Nate’s life-saving organs. Between our nonprofit and his donor recipients, Nate absolutely lives on.

The Legacy Nate Left Behind

Since Nate’s passing, we have heard from countless friends and even strangers who reached out to tell us how much Nate meant to them. Many shared that he regularly checked in when they were struggling with substance use or mental health challenges. Several even sent us text messages from Nate encouraging them to “never give up” and reminding them they were loved. Nate was so loving and caring, always encouraging friends and acquaintances through whatever difficult journeys they were on.

Nate’s Place — Continuing His Spirit of Helping Others

Inspired by the support Nate gave others, we decided to create Nate’s Place, A Wellness and Recovery Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to honoring the way he lived. Nate’s Place embodies the “Recovery Recipe” that helped Nate thrive. We opened our doors in February 2023 and continue his legacy by helping youth and young adults find hope, healing, and recovery.

Warmly,
Heidi Allison and Larry Rhoades (Nate’s Parents)

Included is part of the Honor Walk on 1/25/2022 at Ventura County Medical Center where Nate’s friends and family gathered along the halls of the hospital to say good-bye and cheer him on for helping save the lives of so many. He was then wheeled into the operating room where 14 surgeons were waiting. His organs, tissue, and bone marrow were donated to others. The second part of the video showcases the center to carry on Nate’s work.

Nate truly lives on in the lives of others!
